180 SOUTH TRAILER BY WOODSHED FILMS from mesurf on Vimeo.

180 South follows a new generation of climbers and surfers retracing the footsteps of Yvon Chouinard’s infamous road trip from California to Patagonia, which eventually became the inspiration for Yvon and Doug Tompkins to start the Patagonia Land Trust, an organization that has been able to protect and conserve over 2 million acres of Chile’s wildlands by creating several new national parks. The Patagonia Land Trust has created a progressive and innovative model for national parks around the world. Jimmy Chin traveled to Chile in the Spring of 2007 and filmed many of the mountain and climbing scenes for the film.

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

mj_borneoThe March issue of Men’s Journal just came out featuring an article written by Mark Synnott and photographed by Jimmy Chin. The article, “Borneo’s Forbidden Chasm,” covers the expedition that Jimmy, Mark, Conrad Anker, Kevin Thaw and young gun, Alex Honnold, embarked on last April to climb one of the biggest, steepest rock walls in Southeast Asia. After a month long trip to Mount Kinabalu, a World Heritage Site, the team made the first ascent of a 2500ft long route, surviving severe monsoon rain storms and steep, loose rock, eventually summiting the peak above a sea of clouds.

Congratulations to the Summit on the Summit Team for their successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money and awareness for the global clean water crisis. After enduring a week of heavy rain, snow and altitude on the mountain, everyone on the team made it to the 19,340 ft summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest point in Africa.

The team was also hugely successful in their efforts to raise money and awareness for the global clean water crisis. Besides their message being one of the top tweets on Twitter for several days in January, their story along with Jimmy Chin’s photographs have appeared all over the media, from People Magazine, US Weekly and In Style Magazine to The Late Night Show with Jay Leno and David Letterman. An MTV documentary about the climb will be airing on March 14 as well.

Also on the calendar, the United States State Department and the United Nations Foundation will be hosting a reception honoring the climbers and opening a weeklong exhibit in the State Department featuring Jimmy Chin and Michael Muller’s photographs from the expedition. Opening remarks will include Senator Tim Wirth, Ambassador Elizabeth Bagley and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.  The reception and exhibit are being orchestrated by the UN Foundation in an effort to highlight the need for legislation and funding of programs aiding in the abatement of the global clean water crisis.
